2026 Midterm Results: When to Expect Them — and Why the First Numbers Will Fool You

Sergey Danilov

Подсчёт бюллетеней и карта США на экране — результаты выборов 2026

If you plan to go to bed tonight knowing who won, we have bad news. The first numbers will almost certainly make Republicans look stronger than they’ll end up, and control of the House may, as history suggests, hang on California for another week. That’s not a conspiracy. It’s geography plus the bureaucracy of counting.

Why it matters: Election night is now a stress test for patience. Whoever misreads the 9 p.m. map will be loudly wrong on social media by 9:30.

The big picture

  • First polls close at 6 p.m. ET (parts of Indiana and Kentucky). The last ones close around 1 a.m. ET in Alaska.
  • Per Axios, in every national election since 2018, votes counted by 9 p.m. ET were 4–9 points more Republican than the final result.
  • Final NYT/Siena polls show Democrats ahead in all seven key Senate races: by 5 to 11 points in five of them, narrowly in Alaska (+2) and by a single point in Iowa, which is effectively tied (Siena Research Institute).
  • In the last three elections, AP called House control only 7–8 days after Election Day.

In states split across two time zones, closing times vary by region.

Infographic: 2026 midterm poll closing times in Eastern Time, from 6 p.m. in parts of Indiana and Kentucky to about 1 a.m. in Alaska, with peak red mirage at 9 p.m.; early counts run 4–9 points more Republican than the final tally (Axios); 218 House seats and 51 Senate seats needed for control; AP took 7–8 days to call the House in the last three elections.
Infographic: American Panorama. Source: Axios and The Hill; AP.

Between the lines: the red mirage

The reason is mundane: fast-counting, right-leaning states report first. In 2022, Florida alone accounted for 40% of all Senate votes counted by 9 p.m. Yes, the Sunshine State gets to set the national mood long before California wakes up.

But individual states mislead in different directions (per Axios):

  • Ohio, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas and Iowa start out blue because they count early and mail ballots first. In 2018, Beto O’Rourke led Ted Cruz at 9 p.m. — and lost by 3 points.
  • Michigan swings both ways: in 2024, Elissa Slotkin led by 13 points at 9 p.m., trailed by midnight, and won by less than half a point.
  • Maine starts red and counts slowly. Alaska is the slowest; if no one gets a majority, ranked-choice tabulation happens Nov. 18.

The Senate map: what the final polls say

Republicans hold 53 Senate seats; Democrats need a net gain of four. The final NYT/Siena series (5,708 likely voters, Oct. 23–Nov. 1, as reported by USA Today), with results per the Siena Research Institute:

  • Michigan: Abdul El-Sayed (D) 53%, Mike Rogers (R) 42% — fielded before Haley Stevens endorsed Rogers.
  • Texas: James Talarico (D) 50%, Ken Paxton (R) 43%.
  • Maine: Troy Jackson (D) 51%, Susan Collins (R) 45%.
  • Ohio: Sherrod Brown (D) 49%, Jon Husted (R) 44%.
  • Kansas: Adam Hamilton (D) 49%, Roger Marshall (R) 44%, with Libertarian David Graham at 4%.
  • Alaska: Mary Peltola (D) 48%, Dan Sullivan (R) 46%.
  • Iowa: Josh Turek (D) 48%, Ashley Hinson (R) 47% — effectively tied.

Yes, but: many of these races sit within the poll’s margin of error, which runs from ±3.4 points in Texas to ±5.0 in Alaska, per Siena. The Times’ own headline asks whether the final polls can be trusted, and polls have historically undercounted white working-class voters. Siena’s Don Levy calls a blue wave “a distinct possibility” but adds that “a Senate majority for either party remains possible.”

How AP calls a race

Most outlets, NPR included, rely on the Associated Press. AP doesn’t “project” in the TV sense: it calls a race only when the trailing candidate has no path left. Chamber control is called at 218 House seats or 51 in the Senate. Per Axios, the Senate was decided at 10:44 p.m. in 2018, at 12:06 a.m. in 2024, four days later in 2022 — and in 2020 only after Georgia’s January runoffs.

Our view

We think the real danger tonight isn’t fraud — it’s impatience. Someone will declare “triumph” at 9:30 p.m., someone else will cry “stolen” at 2 a.m., when in reality officials are just finishing the mail ballots. For readers who grew up with “90% turnout by lunchtime” back in Russia, American slowness can look suspicious. That slowness is the point: here, nobody knows the result in advance. And the Senate question is not only domestic — it decides who approves Ukraine aid and Russia sanctions for the next two years.

What’s next

  • Watch the 9 p.m. ET map with skepticism, not adrenaline.
  • Senate picture: likely around midnight or later.
  • House control: based on the last three cycles, possibly a week out.
  • Alaska ranked-choice count, if needed: Nov. 18.

FAQ

When will 2026 election results be known? First results after 6 p.m. ET; a clearer Senate picture near midnight or later. House control may take about a week.

Why can early results be misleading? States count different ballot types in different orders, and fast states like Florida report first — hence the “red mirage.”

What does the NYT/Siena poll show? Democrats lead in all seven key Senate races, but Iowa is effectively tied, Alaska is close, and many races are within the margin of error. A poll is not a forecast.
