Wall Street woke up in a different country, panicked, looked around and decided it kind of likes the place. Futures slid overnight as Democrats swept Congress, then ripped higher by morning.
Why it matters: Investors weren’t cheering Democrats so much as Trump’s conciliatory tone — and the comfort of good old gridlock.
The big picture
- Overnight, Nasdaq 100 futures fell as much as 2.4% and S&P 500 futures 1.4% (Reuters, Bloomberg).
- Around 7:40 a.m. ET, Dow futures were up 803 points (1.5%), S&P 500 futures about 1%, Nasdaq 100 futures 0.5% (CNBC); Bloomberg had Nasdaq 100 up 0.9%.
- Spot gold rose 2.93% to $4,043 and silver 4.44% to $51.98 (CNBC, 5:05 a.m. ET). WTI crude was about 1% lower.
What flipped the tape
Trump told The New York Times he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results and told The Wall Street Journal Republicans would work with Democrats (per CNBC). Reuters reports he acknowledged the Iran war played a role in the GOP’s losses.
“There will be gridlock and historically this is good for the market,” Freedom Capital Markets’ Jay Woods told CNBC.

Winners and losers
Up premarket (CNBC): Walmart +2%, Bank of America +1.9%, Molina +6.3%, Centene +4.7%, UnitedHealth +1.4%, Invesco Solar ETF +5%.
Down: Oracle, CoreWeave, SpaceX and Tesla. Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa has pledged an immediate moratorium on data centers in a key build-out hub (CNBC). JPMorgan had warned of an “AI sell-off on assumed higher regulation” (NBC News).
Dollar and bonds
The dollar hit a one-month low and Treasury yields dipped (CNBC).
Reuters says bond investors were relieved that Trump’s promised $5,000 checks to adults — contingent on a GOP win — won’t materialize. US debt recently topped $40 trillion.
What’s next
- Dec. 9: Fed decision.
- Dec. 11: deadline for a fiscal 2027 funding deal (Reuters).
- Iran: RBC BlueBay’s Mike Bell says the biggest risk is post-election escalation in the Middle East, which could hit stocks and bonds at once. Oil is up 70% this year and stuck above $100 (Reuters).
The stat bulls love: Principal’s Seema Shah notes the S&P 500 has been higher a year after every midterm since World War II — then warns of a “white-knuckled ride.”
Our view
We think this morning’s rally is relief, not a new bull run. $100 oil, the December funding fight and possible AI regulation haven’t gone anywhere. The irony: investors spent years buying “Texas, data center capital” — and Texas just voted for a moratorium. If you hold a 401(k) or IRA, don’t chase the morning’s winners; first post-election sessions often reverse.
